“A lot of times we look up to people who are 15, 20 years into their career, we didn’t see the first 3, 4, 5 years.”
This week we had the privilege of interviewing Jolitina Prophete, a New York-based dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher from New Jersey. She is currently the creative director of Outburst Dance Team, based in Queens, New York. Trained in a wide range of dance styles, she incorporates diverse movement techniques into her craft, though she has found a deep connection with hip-hop.
“You can’t receive from the community until you’re a productive part of that community.”
Passionate about culture and community, Jolitina emphasizes the historical roots of the dances she teaches, ensuring her students understand their significance. She advocates for a return to the pure love of dance, encouraging the industry to prioritize artistry over the pursuit of social platforms.
