Alvin Ailey, a trailblazing choreographer and founder of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, created an internationally renowned dance company that profoundly influenced Black modern dance and American culture. The Whitney Museum’s upcoming exhibition, "Edges of Ailey," opens on September 25th and delves into his personal and artistic life, offering a deeper understanding of his legacy and the cultural impact he made through his work.

Scott Becchi has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board for New Jersey Ballet, succeeding Scott Tross, who served for 13 years. The company looks forward to continuing its mission of delivering world-class performances and nurturing dancers under Becchi's leadership, in alignment with Artistic Director Maria Kowroski's vision.

This month’s ballet roster roundup highlights numerous dancer promotions, appointments, and farewells across various companies, including Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Tulsa Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet. Notable changes include Célestin Boutin and Anya Nesvitaylo being promoted to principal at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and the appointment of Demis Volpi as artistic director of the Hamburg Ballet.




 

Two major European broadcasters, Germany’s ZDF and France Televisions, have joined the CGI animated comedy-drama "20 Dance Street," which has been greenlit for production. The series, following an 11-year-old girl’s journey at the Paris Opera Ballet School, will be introduced to buyers at upcoming trade fairs and aims to reach a young audience with its blend of drama, diversity, and ballet.

The second annual Ballet on the Beach Dance Festival will take place on September 21, 2024, at Assateague State Park, featuring free outdoor performances by various ballet companies, including Continuum Contemporary Ballet and artists from the Washington Ballet. Attendees can also enjoy eco-talks about the island's environment and history, making it a family-friendly event that connects the community with the arts and nature.

Join the Whitney Museum and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on September 8 for a free outdoor dance class led by former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater member Amos Machanic, where participants will learn excerpts from Ailey’s Revelations. The event celebrates the upcoming Edges of Ailey exhibition at the Whitney, with performance tickets going on sale September 10.
