After 20 years with Boston Ballet, principal dancer John Lam is retiring, focusing on teaching, founding a nonprofit dance company, and writing a memoir while preparing for his final performance. Lam's dedication to his craft has inspired his sons and led him to embrace a new chapter, marked by passing on his knowledge and passion to future generations. In the fall he will begin teaching as an associate professor at Berklee’s Dance Division.
The Royal Opera House will rename its company to the Royal Ballet and Opera to better reflect its diverse offerings, following research indicating that many were unaware of the ballet performances held there. Chief Executive Alex Beard emphasizes that the change acknowledges the long-standing presence of both the Royal Ballet and Opera, extending beyond the physical venue to encompass a wide range of artistic endeavors.
Caroline Simpkins, a kinesiology doctoral student, conducted research comparing older adults with ballet training to those without, finding that ballet may reduce fall risk by improving body control. Her background in dance contributed to her success in presenting her findings, winning first place in the doctoral category of Georgia State University's Three-Minute Thesis competition, and she will continue her research on fall prevention as a postdoctoral fellow at the university.
