We have a lot of news from across the pond today. First up, the beloved London City Ballet has returned to stage again after nearly 30 years. The English National Ballet’s Swan Lake will be available in cinema’s for the first time in the UK and internationally starting October 30th in a daring new format. And from our friends up north, The National Ballet of Canada will be bidding adieu to one of their beloved principal dancers, Jurgita Dronina, after a decade long career.

London City Ballet has returned to stage again nearly 30 years after it closed down. Once recognized as one of the world’s leading dance companies, the company has re-established itself at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in north London.
Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Canada Jurgita Dronina will take her final bow at the end of this season after a decade with the Toronto based company. Jurgita has a long standing career of dancing the lead role in everything from The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker to Serenade, A Streetcar named Desire, and Tarantella.
Her Majesty Queen Maxima will open the new building of the Dutch National Ballet Academy on October 1. It marks the end of a decade long search for a new home for the NBA. The NBA is the premier program for classical ballet in the Netherlands and hosting over 165 students, local and international.
Trafalgar Releasing will distribute Derek Deane’s Swan Lake in-the-round to cinemas across the UK and internationally for the first from Wednesday, October 30, 2024. It will allow dance fans the opportunity to experience the ballet a 360 degree view of one of the most popular ballets of all time. Tickets go on sale September 11th, here.
Birmingham Royal Ballet announces a new programme from BRB2’s third UK tour in 2025, Carlos Acosta’s Ballet Celebration: Diaghilev and the birth of Modern Ballet. This repertoire will showcase some of the best ballet dancers aged 18 – 22 from around the world in work that will pay tribute to Mikhail Fokine. The company will debut at Birmingham Hippodrome, then travel to Sadler’s Wells East, Pool Lighthouse and finally, Royal and Derngate in Northampton.

New Chamber Ballet is dedicated to the creation of new ballets performed to live chamber music. This weekend in NYC, they will be performing four ballets by their creator Miro Magloire with musice by Pierre Boulez, Tristan Murail, Luciano Berio, and Johann Sebastian Bach. Purchase tickets here.

Watch host Karim Zeroual interviews Zoo Nations founder Kate Prince, the principal dancer of the Royal Opera House Stephen McCrae, and former principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada Jillian Vanstone as they discuss the familiar characters that come to life in an intersection of hip-hop and ballet, infused with color, choreography and extravagant design.
